Investment Management
Investment Philosophy
The real value added by Grimes & Company is active investment management. Unlike many firms, we do not outsource the money management functions of our business. Research is performed internally using proprietary valuation models and company rating systems. Portfolios are custom built and intensively managed with asset allocation based on the specific needs and goals of the individual client.
Grimes & Company considers three broad asset classes when developing and managing client portfolios: equities, fixed income, and alternative investments. Cash and money market positions are used, as well, for short term liquidity or to dial back risk during periods of turmoil in the markets. The boundaries and acceptable ranges of each asset class are defined in the client’s Investment Policy Statement (IPS). As discretionary Investment Managers, we actively adjust the allocations to each asset class within the parameters allowed in the IPS given our opinion of the economic and investment backdrop and our assessment of the risk and reward profiles of each component.
We manage the bond and equity allocations with a core/tactical investment approach. Our core investment strategies consist of high quality stocks and bonds, mutual funds and/or ETF positions that we are comfortable holding during both good and bad times. The core strategies are managed with a long term perspective with a value bias. The tactical components of client portfolios enable us to gain exposure to opportunistic investment sectors. In essence this enables us to dial risk depending on the macro investment environment.
